Pro-Israel lobbying operates on both sides of the Atlantic, through AIPAC in the US and Conservative Friends of Israel, Labour Friends of Israel and UK Lawyers for Israel in the UK. Israel’s 2026 public-diplomacy budget — hasbara — was reported at $730 million, nearly five times the $150 million allocated in 2025.
Legal pressure also deserves scrutiny. In their 2025 regulatory complaint, the European Legal Support Center and Public Interest Law Centre accused UK Lawyers for Israel of using threatening letters to silence Palestine solidarity: lawfare against public participation. UKLFI called the allegations unfounded.
UKLFI interventions
- Whitworth gallery · 2021. Forensic Architecture says its Palestine solidarity statement was removed following pressure from UKLFI and other groups. The statement was later reinstated.
- Hospital artwork · 2023. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital removed artwork by children from Gaza after UKLFI complained. UKLFI records the complaint and removal.
- Morley College concert · 2024. The college cancelled The World Stands With Palestine following a UKLFI complaint. The college cited political neutrality; the organisers condemned the legal threats.
- Palestine House sign · 2025–26. UKLFI complained to Camden about an illuminated “Stop the Genocide” sign. UKLFI later reported that Camden refused retrospective advertising permission.
- Great Vegan Gathering · July 2026. The Scouts cancelled its venue booking after UKLFI raised allegations about performers, including HAWXX’s song Resistance Is Justified. The festival was cancelled. The bands disputed UKLFI’s allegations.
In July 2025, Marji Mansfield, a 68-year-old grandmother of seven, was arrested under the Terrorism Act for holding a placard opposing genocide and supporting Palestine Action. Amnesty condemned terrorism-related prosecutions of peaceful protesters.
Weaponisation of antisemitism.
Human Rights Watch and more than 100 civil-society groups warned that the IHRA definition has been used to mislabel criticism of Israel as antisemitic and suppress Palestinian-rights advocacy. The IHRA definition itself distinguishes criticism of Israel comparable to criticism of other countries from antisemitism.
This critique concerns censorship and legal pressure. Claims about who organised a violent attack require separate evidence.
Policing and policy.
In July 2026, the UK announced £251.1 million over three years for policing and security around Jewish communities. It covers neighbourhoods, schools and synagogues, alongside national coordination, officer training and online hate-crime investigations.
